Cyber Essentials is the entry-level CSA mark for Singapore SMEs. Self-assessment plus independent verification, 2-year validity, optional cloud/OT/AI pillars, and funding support for first-time applicants through February 2028.
LowerPlane serves startups in the United States, Singapore, India and worldwide.
Identity, software updates, backups, access, incident reporting and awareness — foundational cyber hygiene.
SaaS startups usually pick this up. Covers cloud posture, identity federation, logging, encryption, backup.
For industrial / operational-technology estates. Applies in manufacturing, utilities, infrastructure.
AI startups add this. Model security, provenance, and incident response for AI systems.
Self-assess against the Cyber Essentials requirements, then an independent assessor verifies the self-assessment. On a satisfactory verification, the mark is issued for two years.
Cyber Essentials isn’t typically sufficient for US or EU enterprise procurement, where SOC 2 or ISO 27001 is the standard ask. See Cyber Trust vs ISO 27001 vs SOC 2.
Two years. After two years the organisation must requalify with the independent assessor.
Singapore-incorporated SMEs and non-profit organisations, for their first certification. CSA has published funding support available until 6 February 2028; reconfirm the published eligibility rules before applying.
No. CSA Cyber Essentials is a Singapore scheme, independent of the UK NCSC Cyber Essentials programme. The controls look similar in spirit but the schemes, assessors and acceptance are different.
The scheme itself is quote-based from an independent assessor. CSA's first-cert funding offsets a share for eligible Singapore SMEs. Scope and headcount drive the final quote; ask two assessors for comparison.
For a 1–50 person SG startup with simple digital operations, Cyber Essentials is almost always the right starting point: cheaper, self-assessment-based, 2-year validity, and funded by CSA. Cyber Trust fits once your digital estate (and risk profile) grows and buyers specifically ask for the higher-tier mark.
Nearly always yes. The 2025 Cloud pillar covers the controls SaaS startups actually run — identity federation, logging, encryption, backup posture across cloud providers. Adding it strengthens the mark's credibility with security-aware buyers without extending validity beyond 2 years.
A startup with modern cloud operations typically moves from kickoff to certification in 4–8 weeks — 2–4 weeks of self-assessment and gap closure, then the independent verification. Starting from zero on the foundational controls (MFA everywhere, patching, backups), add another 2–4 weeks.
Cyber Essentials renews every 2 years, which keeps the overhead modest, but it is a flat baseline rather than a tiered scheme. Once your risk profile justifies risk-based governance — typically 50+ staff or regulated-sector buyers — upgrade to Cyber Trust or add ISO 27001.
LowerPlane maps your controls to Cyber Essentials, Cyber Trust, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 side-by-side.
